Van der Valk Curaçao – How It All Began

We arrived with little more than a set of keys and suitcases full of dreams.

The sun dipped low over the Caribbean Sea, a warm breeze danced on our skin, and the rhythmic tambú echoed through the island air. This was the beginning of our Curaçao journey—a story rooted in passion, family, and the dream of creating something special.

A Legacy Begins

In 1989, our family planted its roots on this vibrant island with the opening of the Van der Valk Plaza Hotel, nestled in the heart of Willemstad. Marc van der Valk, a proud third-generation hotelier from the Netherlands, led the charge as managing director.

For us—his children—this island became home. We grew up with our feet in the sand and our hearts forever tied to Curaçao’s colorful culture and natural beauty.

From Vision to Reality

By 2003, a new dream had taken shape: a tropical haven by the sea. That vision became reality with the birth of Kontiki Beach Resort, set along the lively shoreline of Mambo Beach. Designed as a sanctuary of wooden cabanas and lush, winding lagoons, Kontiki offered something unique—a place to swim beneath palm trees and unwind in your own slice of paradise.

In 2006, we opened our doors to the world.

A Family’s Passion

Today, we—Terence, Justin, and Tiara van der Valk—carry on the legacy. With deep love for Curaçao and an unwavering commitment to heartfelt hospitality, we’ve taken the reins to lead Kontiki into its next chapter.

Now, we proudly move forward under a refreshed name and renewed vision: the Kontiki. More than a resort, it is a reflection of our family’s dream, the vibrant spirit of the island, and the warm welcome we extend to every guest.
